Is artificial grass static

April 6, 2018Royal Grass

Just like many materials, artificial grass can become static. Does it sometimes feel like your clothes are being pulled towards the artificial turf when you’re lying on it? Or perhaps you even feel a small shock? This is because artificial grass can become static. It is a natural phenomenon which can be easily resolved.

What is static electricity?

Static electricity is induced by friction between different objects or materials. Static charge can also be induced by friction between dry air and other objects. The friction causes the object to be positively or negatively charged. This can also occur with artificial turf.

Especially with warm or extremely cold weather or very dry air, can artificial grass become static. In particular, artificial grass that has recently been installed will become static. When metal objects, such as a gate or balustrade, are in close proximity to the artificial grass, it is more sensitive to static electricity. With time the artificial turf will become static less quickly.

Solution for static artificial grass

A lawn with static artificial grass is usually at most somewhat annoying, but in most cases, you won’t even notice. Sometimes you may feel it in your hair or you can feel your shirt being pulled towards the grass. Occasionally you might feel a small shock. Static artificial grass can be rather annoying however for people with a hearing aid. Fortunately, there are some things you can try to solve the problem.

When artificial grass is statically charged, most of the time it helps to moisten it. Simply spraying some water will discharge the artificial turf. A way to avoid static charge could be by using an antistatic product that you can buy at a local DIY shop.
