Is Artificial Grass Safe?
Royal Grass® is completely safe and our products have been tested against the European standard EN 71-3. This means our artificial grass contains no harmful chemicals and is safe for young children and pets. So why are safety concerns relating to artificial grass often in the news and media?
Harmful rubber granules
In 2016 the media reported that playing sport on synthetic grass may have health risks. Researchers say the rubber granules (not the grass) used on artificial sports pitches can contain harmful toxins.
This is not applicable to artificial lawns because rubber granules are only used for sports surfaces.
Rubber granules (also known as rubber crumb or rubber infill or EPDM) are spread across a sports field so that a football will respond in a natural way. For example, FIFA measure the ball bounce, ball roll and angle rebound of a football to ensure they are within acceptable parameters before certifying an artificial football pitch (3g pitch) as suitable for professional match play. The rubber granules are therefore essential for providing a playing surface for high level football. Unfortunately if you touch these rubber granules, some toxins may be absorbed into the skin.
One article in The Telegraph states – “Dr Andrew Thorley, a lecturer in Lung Cell Biology at Imperial College London… acknowledges that compounds found in the rubber crumb have been known to lead to the development of cancer”. This is not surprising because the rubber crumb is usually obtained from recycled truck tyres, which may contain arsenic, chromium and lead. The Telegraph article continues to explain that goalkeepers tend to be the worst affected as they have more contact with the pitch due to diving for the ball. How safe is Royal Grass®?
In 2004, Dutch Test Institute TNO certified that Royal Grass® products meet the strict safety requirements of European standard EN71-3.
In 2016, Dutch Test Institute TNO retested our products to ensure standards have been maintained. Once again, our EN71-3 certification was successful.
Royal Grass® never uses rubber crumb. If an infill is needed, we only apply natural sand to our artificial grass.
Established in 2003, Royal Grass® has always manufactured artificial grass with health and safety as a priority. Our EN71-3 certification usually applies when testing toys for child safety. Products are only certified safe if the PAH level is zero and no harmful substances are released when the toys are played with or sucked on. Now your family can enjoy time in the garden and on the lawn with complete peace of mind. Even if your child touches or licks the artificial grass, it is perfectly fine because Royal Grass® is equally as safe as a children’s toy.
