An international primary and secondary school recently installed Royal Grass® artificial grass on its sports and playing field. The campus has a large sports complex with a playground of some 1,800 square meters. This used to be a pitch of natural grass, but the maintenance costs were getting rather high due to the intensive use of the grass. The pitch would quickly wear out and needed to be replaced each year.
When the school built a new underground parking underneath the playing field, the school board decided to transform the pitch as well: natural grass was replaced with artificial turf. The parking was made of concrete because this was the most durable option. Obviously, concrete is not very inviting for a playing field. The main demands of the playing field were that it should be sustainable, safe and child-friendly. Artificial grass fulfils all of these so it was the perfect solution.
Most suitable type of artificial turf
A customised plan was designed for the school’s playing field with artificial turf. The best solution for this purpose turned out to be Royal Grass® Exclusive. This type of artificial grass was specially designed for sports fields and playgrounds. It has an extra strong fibre and a very lifelike look. A clean and washed sand was used for the infill between the blades of grass.
Safety is one of the most important requirements of a playing field. Plus it needs to feel nice and soft when children play on it. To comply with both of these requirements, a special shock-absorbing layer was placed underneath the turf. This layer offers fall cushioning for a soft landing and in combination with artificial grass it ensures the field is safe, soft and sustainable.
